Tear Notch
Deliver a frustration-free opening experience with our standard Tear Notches. Essential for heat-sealed packaging, these precision-cut indentations allow customers to open the pouch easily by hand, eliminating the need for scissors or cutting tools. Strategically placed on both sides of the bag above the zipper, the tear notch ensures a clean, intuitive tear that grants immediate access to the product while leaving the resealable closure intact. It is the simple, industry-standard feature that completes a professional, tamper-evident package.
The Key to Easy, Tool-Free Opening
A Tear Notch is a precision-cut indentation located on the side seals of the pouch, positioned specifically to provide an easy, tool-free opening experience. Since modern flexible packaging is often made from durable, high-barrier films designed to resist punctures and tearing, opening these bags by hand can be difficult without a starting point. The tear notch solves this by creating a guided “weak point” that allows the consumer to rip through the material cleanly and effortlessly. It is an essential feature for heat-sealed packaging, ensuring that while your product remains hermetically sealed and tamper-evident during shipping, it remains frustration-free and accessible for your customer without the need for scissors.
Why Pack Your Product in a Tear Notch Pouch?
Incorporating a Tear Notch is the definitive way to ensure product safety without sacrificing consumer convenience. It allows you to heat-seal your packaging for a tamper-evident finish—guaranteeing your customers that the contents are authentic and untouched since leaving your facility—while providing an intuitive, tool-free opening experience. This simple feature bridges the gap between a secure, professional seal and the effortless accessibility that modern consumers demand, protecting both your brand’s reputation and the user’s experience.

Why is a tear notch recommended for custom packaging?
A tear notch is essential if you plan to heat seal your bags. It bridges the gap between security and convenience. By heat sealing the top, you provide a tamper-evident closure that guarantees product safety. The tear notch then gives the consumer a specific starting point to easily rip open that seal by hand, without needing scissors or knives.
Where is the tear notch positioned on the pouch?
The tear notch is strategically placed on the side seals of the pouch, located specifically in the “header” area—above the resealable zipper track and below the top heat-seal line. This positioning ensures that tearing the bag opens the heat seal but leaves the zipper mechanism completely intact for future use.
Does the tear notch compromise the airtight seal of the bag?
Not at all. The tear notch is an indentation on the side edge of the film material, but it does not penetrate the storage compartment itself. Until the customer physically tears the bag open, the internal environment remains hermetically sealed, protecting your product from oxygen and moisture just as effectively as a bag without a notch.
Will the tear notch work on thick, multi-layer Mylar bags?
Yes. Our tear notches are precision-cut to function effectively even on high-thickness, heavy-duty laminated films (including aluminum foil structures). The notch provides the necessary stress concentration point that allows the strong material to tear cleanly and linearly when force is applied.
What happens to the resealable zipper after the bag is torn open?
The tear notch is designed to guide the tear above the zipper line. When the customer removes the top header strip using the tear notch, the press-to-close zipper below remains fully functional. This allows the customer to reseal the bag repeatedly to maintain freshness after the initial opening.
Do I have to heat seal the bag for the tear notch to be useful?
While not strictly mandatory, the tear notch is designed to work in conjunction with heat sealing. If you do not heat seal the top opening (above the zipper), the bag is already openable via the zipper, rendering the tear notch redundant. For a professional, retail-ready finish that assures customers the product is new, we highly recommend heat sealing above the tear notch.
